Drumheller - Dinosaur Capital of the World
In 2009 the Smithsonian Magazine conducted a new poll to update where is the dinosaur capital of the world. Drumheller was voted the dinosaur capital again by a wide margin.

Beyond the abundance of dinosaur statues and the presence of Drumheller in the heart of the Canadian badlands there are some very good reasons that Drumheller is the center of dinosaurs in the world today.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum was voted as the number one natural history museum in the world in a similar vote conducted in 2009. This was a bit of a surprise to many American's but not to Canadians. The Royal Tyrrell Museum is Drumheller's feature attraction and has steadily improved over the years. Fossil World Discovery Centre follows in those same footsteps. Come see for yourself we are sure you will agree.

    Drumheller's Main Attractions:

  • Royal Tyrrell Museum
  • Fossil World Discovery Centre
  • World's Largest Dinosaur
  • Reptile World
  • Town of Drumheller free spray park
  • Atlas Coal Mine
  • Hodos

It takes more than an afternoon to see all that Drumheller has to offer.

There are many good hotel choices in Drumheller Alberta. If you are coming in the summer months of June and July it is best to book your hotel in advance.

Camp grounds are plentiful in and around Drumheller. Staying in one of the in town campgrounds gives the family lots of activity choices. Drumheller is small and everything is accessible by bicycle from the in town campgrounds.

Travel Alberta through the Drumheller Chamber of Commerce has lots of information on Drumheller and the activities you will find here.

Exploring for Fossils in the Badlands of Drumheller
The hills of Drumheller are still rich in fossils today. Thousands of dinosaurs remain in the hills around Drumheller. Some whole dinosaurs are laying on the surface and can be seen in various stages of decay.

On the North side of the 11th hole of the Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club in Drumheller (we recommend this course) a Parasaurolophus was discovered in 2008 after only a few minutes of digging in an attempt to widen the fairway. The Royal Tyrrell Museum came over and recorded the location of this dinosaur and asked that excavation stop and the dinosaur covered back up. It remains there today.

You are welcome to climb the hills and enjoy the fossils you discover right where you find them. One of the best places to do that is in the nature walk on the grounds of the Royal Tyrrell Museum.

Taking home fossils found on the surface in Drumheller is another matter. Fossils in Alberta are protected and surface collecting can only be done with the permission of the land owner. Even surface collected fossils from Drumheller cannot be removed from Alberta without a permit. All major finds must be reported to the Royal Tyrrell Museum.

No below surface digging is permitted for fossils without a permit, fines up to $50,000 and jail time can be levied for breaking any of these rules.

These rules are there for the protection of this valuable resource and our heritage. Still fossil hunting in the hills of Drumheller can be very exciting and rewarding even if all you take home are photos and memories.
